Let’s talk about these parks one by one:

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

This is the first place that should cross your mind when we talk about gorilla trekking in Uganda. It is not surprising that Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is Uganda’s most famous gorilla trekking destination and ranks among Africa’s most biologically diverse forests. It is baffling that this park shelters nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population. Isn’t that beautiful? Additionally, Bwindi has very dense vegetation; you find misty hills there, and there are also ancient trees in this park that create an environment that perfectly supports gorilla families. You know how these guys(gorillas) love trees and thick forests. They are perfectly suited for Bwindi.

What sets Bwindi Apart?

What is the difference between gorilla trekking and gorilla habituation?

Let me explain to you the difference in the easiest way possible. With gorilla trekking, you visit an already habituated group in the wild for a short encounter of one hour. Gorilla habituation, on the other hand, is the process of gradually accustoming a wild gorilla group to human presence so they tolerate researchers and guides. It’s a scientific/conservation activity that may include controlled visits.

Whereas Trekking usually lasts a few hours total (hiking + 1 hour with gorillas), habituation can take many days or months of repeated, close, careful exposure; visits may last longer and involve more detailed observation. Researchers use habituation to gradually familiarize gorillas with human presence so that tourism activities remain safe and sustainable. I hope the difference is clearly understood.

The moment you start thinking about Gorilla Trekking in Uganda or Rwanda, you must understand the importance of securing a gorilla trekking permit before visiting the parks. As I explained earlier, trekking activities are also aimed at protecting the endangered gorillas and maintaining sustainable tourism levels. Where does the money come from? When you purchase the gorilla trekking permits.

Permit Costs in Uganda

In Uganda, the gorilla trekking permits are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). In addition to issuing gorilla trekking permits, UWA regulates tourism activities in the National Parks and ensures that gorilla conservation guidelines are strictly followed.

Currently, a standard gorilla trekking permit costs 800 USD per person for foreign non-residents. With this permit, visitors can spend one hour observing a habituated gorilla family within the forest. These permits are specific to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Permit Costs in Rwanda

Things are quite different when we cross over to Rwanda though. Rwanda is more of a high-end destination for gorilla trekking. Permits in this land go for $1,500 per person per day for foreigners, $500 for foreign residents, and $200 for East African citizens or Rwandan nationals. For a private gorilla trekking experience, Rwanda offers permits priced at $15,000 per person. I already told you this a bit high end compared to Uganda. That price also includes access to a gorilla group and a personalized guide.

Booking Process

I will give you a tip. When planning to go gorilla trekking in Uganda or Rwanda, we strongly recommend booking permits several months in advance. The reason is that demand often exceeds availability during peak seasons. As the saying goes, “first come, first served,” and you do not want to miss out. First of all, the distances between Kigali and Volcanoes National Park are very short and that gives you convenience especially if you are working with very tight schedules. Its true that the permits costs are higher but it gives you a worthwhile premium tourism experience. In Rwanda, You can also combine gorilla trekking with cultural tours, such as visits to the Kigali Genocide Memorial and local markets.

In this ultimate guide to gorilla trekking in Uganda, as I promised, let’s have a detailed look at what travelers experience during a typical trekking day in Uganda’s national parks especially.

The adventure starts early in the morning, when the visitors move to the park headquarters for a mandatory briefing session with the rangers. You are given the trekking rules, safety procedures, and conservation guidelines to follow. Remember that this is to protect you and the gorillas. After that, the officials assign each group of eight visitors to a specific gorilla family based on the trekking difficulty and the trekkers’ fitness levels. You may be wondering, why only eight? Well, it’s done to minimize disturbing the gorillas.

Following that arrangement, you are led through the forests by experienced rangers, while the trackers communicate the gorillas’ movement over the radio.  During Gorilla trekking in Uganda, you should know that it could last several hours. Over that time, the trekkers navigate muddy trails (when it rains), steep hills, and thick vegetation on their way to the gorilla families.

Eventually, trekkers reach the gorilla family, either resting or feeding in the forest. Then the magical hour begins, observing these magnificent animals while maintaining a respectful distance. Watching gorillas interact, groom, and play creates unforgettable memories that define the entire safari experience. You can only feel it while there, so why not come through?

Rules and Responsible Tourism during gorilla trekking in Uganda.

Is there a place where there are no rules and responsibilities? I do not think so. Likewise, during Gorilla trekking in Uganda or Rwanda, you are obligated to follow strict rules. This benefits both the gorillas and you because the rules are designed to protect them and you. The respective Wildlife Authorities make and implement these guidelines. Think about it, gorillas share a large portion of DNA with humans; this makes them vulnerable to human diseases. There is no reason why the poor gorilla should catch diseases we pass on to it. Hence the strict rules.

During the watching exercise, you must remain at least seven meters away from gorillas to reduce the possibility of passing a disease to them, and you also don’t want to stress these animals. I have never imagined what a stressed gorilla can do. Since I have not seen it on any of the safaris with my visitors before, I surely do not wish for it. According to the guidelines, the trekkers must avoid flash photography. Definitely, the tour operators are not an exception; all of us must avoid them. Gorillas do not like sudden, bright lights, which may disturb them or trigger defensive reactions. You also need to stay quiet and avoid sudden movements that could make the animals feel threatened.

Gorilla trekking is restricted to persons aged fifteen years or older. The younger ones may struggle to remain calm during wildlife encounters, and you do not need this face-to-face with gorillas.

Like we said earlier, if you feel sick, it is a terrible idea to go trekking because illnesses like the flu can spread rapidly among gorilla populations.
